The Full Distance Legends (40+ Years of Racing)
These are the races that built European long-course triathlon. Many predate the IRONMAN brand’s arrival on the continent. Racing one is not just a physical challenge, it is stepping into history.
DATEV Challenge Roth, Germany (since 1984)
If you race one triathlon in your lifetime, make it Roth. The world’s largest long-distance triathlon draws 3,500 individual athletes and around 300,000 spectators into a small Bavarian town every July. The famous Solarer Berg climb is lined wall to wall with cowbell-ringing fans, pure Tour de France energy. The course held the world’s best time for decades and remains one of the fastest iron-distance courses on earth. The 2027 race is confirmed for Sunday 4 July 2027, and it is already sold out. Online entry opened on 13 July 2026 and vanished in 18 seconds, with individual slots gone in 15. If you missed it, the Late Entry Draw is your only route in. Registration for 2028 opens the Monday after the 2027 race, so set a calendar reminder now. Date: 4 July 2027 (sold out).
Embrunman, France (since 1984)
Running since the same year as Roth, Embrunman is everything Challenge Roth is not: brutal, lonely, and unapologetically French-Alpine. The bike course features 3,600 metres of climbing, including the fearsome Col de l’Izoard at 2,360 m. The race starts at 5:50 am in the dark. Heat waves and mountain snow have both featured on the same race day. Three-times winner Bella Bayliss calls it the toughest long-distance race she has done, harder than Hawaii, harder than Lanzarote. Embrunman keeps its traditional slot on the French public holiday of 15 August every year. Date: 15 August 2027.
Challenge Almere-Amsterdam, Netherlands (since 1985)
Europe’s oldest long-distance triathlon and the world’s only iron-distance race held entirely below sea level. Almere has hosted 11 European Championships and two World Championships since 1985. The course is flat, sheltered, and fast, ideal for a personal best, with a spectacular run through the city centre. A genuine piece of triathlon heritage. Date: September 2027 (to be confirmed).
IRONMAN Lanzarote, Spain (since 1992)
Thirty-five years and counting. Lanzarote is not a race for a fast time, it is a race for a story. Volcanic lava fields, 8,300 feet of climbing, and relentless Atlantic trade winds combine to make this one of the hardest branded IRONMAN events on earth. IRONMAN operates the largest branded long-course network in Europe. For 2027 the European Championship title sits solely with Frankfurt, Hamburg returns as a standard full-distance race, and IRONMAN Kärnten-Klagenfurt in Austria joins the confirmed early-season line-up.
IRONMAN Hamburg, Germany (6 June 2027)
A city-centre full IRONMAN through one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. The course takes athletes through Hamburg’s iconic streets and waterways, with massive crowd support throughout. One of the faster runs on the European circuit and an excellent early-season target.
IRONMAN Kärnten-Klagenfurt, Austria (13 to 14 June 2027)
An Austrian classic with roots going back to 1999, racing on the shores of the Wörthersee. A clear-water lake swim, a fast rolling bike, and a lakeside run make Klagenfurt one of the more approachable full-distance courses in central Europe, with famously warm local support.
Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt, Germany (27 June 2027)
Frankfurt has hosted the European Championship since 2002 and consistently produces some of the fastest times in the sport. A flat, technical bike course and a flat run along the riverbanks make this a world-record candidate. A Pro Series event with a significant professional field.
IRONMAN Nice, France (June 2027, date to be confirmed)
A Mediterranean sea swim, a brutal hilly bike into the Provençal hinterland, and a flat marathon along the Promenade des Anglais in front of huge crowds. Nice is one of the most scenic and most iconic full IRONMAN venues in the world. The city confirmed that IRONMAN France Nice and the 70.3 continue on the calendar, though the World Championship years have moved elsewhere. Date: June 2027 (to be confirmed).
IRONMAN Switzerland Thun, Switzerland (July 2027, date to be confirmed)
Alpine lake swim in Thun with stunning mountain backdrops, a rolling bike through Swiss countryside, and a flat run into the city. A long-running Swiss classic with consistently beautiful race-day conditions.
IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain (July 2027, date to be confirmed)
The full IRONMAN in Spain’s Basque cultural capital, alongside the established 70.3. A city with well over a decade of triathlon heritage and famously passionate local support.

IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna, Italy (September 2027, date to be confirmed)
A flat, fast course on Italy’s Adriatic coast at Cervia, beloved for its warm Italian crowd atmosphere and excellent late-summer conditions. Consistently one of the more accessible full IRONMAN courses in Europe for a personal best attempt.
IRONMAN Wales, Wales (September 2027, date to be confirmed)
Tenby is known as Iron Town for a reason. The community atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else on the IRONMAN calendar, with the whole town coming out. The course, however, is brutally hilly on both the bike and the run. Race it for the experience, not the finishing time.
IRONMAN Portugal Cascais, Portugal (October 2027, date to be confirmed)

The 70.3 distance is where European triathlon is growing fastest. In 2027 the continent offers a half-distance race for virtually every month of the season, and IRONMAN 70.3 Tours joins the list after its one-off full-distance edition in 2026.
IRONMAN 70.3 Tours Métropole Loire Valley, France (6 June 2027)
After a sold-out inaugural full-distance edition in 2026, Tours returns to the 70.3 format for 2027. The river Loire swim and a flat, château-lined bike course make it one of the fastest half-distance courses in France, and a strong personal best opportunity for age-groupers. Date: 6 June 2027.
IRONMAN 70.3 St. Pölten, Austria (23 May 2027)

IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau, Germany (30 May 2027)

Challenge Family, The Athlete-First Alternative
Challenge Family races are widely regarded as having a warmer, more community-oriented atmosphere than the IRONMAN circuit. Entry fees are typically lower, courses are often in beautiful destination locations, and the racing culture feels closer to grassroots triathlon. The T100 Triathlon World Tour Comes to Europe
New for this guide in 2027: the T100 Triathlon World Tour, the professional 100 km series raced over a 2 km swim, 80 km bike, and 18 km run. Alongside the pro racing, T100 weekends host mass-participation age-group events, so you can race the same course as the world’s best. Two European rounds feature on the 2027 tour.
T100 Marbella, Spain (18 to 19 September 2027)
The Costa del Sol hosts one of the flagship European rounds, with a Mediterranean swim and fast coastal roads. A brilliant late-season target if you fancy the T100 distance in guaranteed warmth. Date: 18 to 19 September 2027.
T100 French Riviera, France (date to be confirmed)
The French Riviera round returns to the tour with dates still to be confirmed at the time of writing. Expect the same spectacular Côte d’Azur backdrop that has made it a fan favourite. Date: to be confirmed.
Independent Classics, Off the Beaten Path
Some of the best races in Europe carry no brand other than their own name. These independent events often have the deepest local roots, the most character, and the most passionate organisers.
Alpe d’Huez Triathlon, France (late July 2027, date to be confirmed)
Not a race for the faint-hearted. A mountain reservoir swim at altitude, a bike course through iconic Tour de France climbs including the 21 hairpins of Alpe d’Huez, and a run high above sea level. Raced since 2006 and already considered one of triathlon’s most iconic events, mentioned alongside Kona and Roth for sheer experience.
Mont Saint-Michel Triathlon, France (June 2027, date to be confirmed)
A swim in the tidal dam opened just once a year, a panoramic bike through Normandy, and a marathon that finishes with an ascent towards the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mont Saint-Michel. One of the most unique and visually spectacular race experiences in Europe.

A fast, sunny late-season middle-distance race on Spain’s east coast. Ideal for athletes chasing a personal best or extending the race season into autumn in warm conditions.
The Extreme Circuit, If You Dare
The XTri and extreme triathlon circuits are effectively a different sport. Entry is usually by ballot. A support crew is required at most events. Finishing times of 13 to 16 hours are normal. These races prioritise the journey over the result, and they attract athletes seeking what the mainstream circuit simply cannot offer. Most 2027 dates open by ballot later in the year, so treat the timings below as guidance and check each official site.
Norseman Xtreme Triathlon, Norway (early August 2027, date to be confirmed)
250 slots, thousands of applicants from around the world. Athletes jump from the back of a ferry into the icy Hardangerfjord at dawn, tackle 10,000 feet of bike climbing through Norwegian mountain passes, then face the infamous Zombie Hill before summiting Gaustatoppen on foot. The median finishing time is over 15 hours. The king of extreme triathlon.
Swissman Xtreme Triathlon, Switzerland (June 2027, date to be confirmed)
Since 2013. A point-to-point adventure starting in the warmth of Ascona on Lake Maggiore and finishing under the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Three Alpine passes, cold lakes, steep climbs, and athletes from dozens of nations. One of the world’s most spectacular triathlon courses.
Celtman Extreme Triathlon, Scotland (June 2027, date to be confirmed)
The Scottish Norseman. A five-hour drive north of Glasgow into the most remote landscape in the British Isles. Sea loch swim, 202 km bike, and a run that finishes high in the Torridon mountains. Jellyfish in the swim, Atlantic headwinds on the bike, and a brutal mountain finish.
Alpsman Extreme Triathlon, France (July 2027, date to be confirmed)
Athletes take a boat to the start line in the middle of Lac d’Annecy. The full-distance course includes around 4,000 m of Alpine climbing on the bike. There are two finish lines: a summit finish at Semnoz for athletes who make the cut-off, or additional lake loops for those who do not. Racing since 2016 and already a fixture on the extreme circuit.
Altriman, France (July 2027, date to be confirmed)
One of the founding events of the XTri format, running since 2009. Set in the same stunning Alpine region as Alpsman, with mountain terrain, exposed conditions, and a summit run finish.
