best triathlon races in europe 2026

Europe is the spiritual home of long-distance triathlon. From the volcanic lava fields of Lanzarote to the royal gardens of Versailles, from a Norwegian fjord ferry leap to the sun-soaked streets of Barcelona, the continent offers a race for every kind of triathlete. Whether you are chasing a personal best on a flat, fast course, ticking off a bucket-list epic, or hunting down a race with four decades of history, this guide covers 50 of the best triathlon races in Europe for 2026 — middle and full distance.

Races are grouped by category. Use the table at the end for a quick-reference overview of all 50 events.

The Full Distance Legends (40+ Years of Racing)

These are the races that built the European long-course triathlon. Many predate the IRONMAN brand’s arrival on the continent. Racing one is not just a physical challenge — it is stepping into history.

DATEV Challenge Roth — Roth, Germany (since 1984)

If you race one triathlon in your lifetime, make it Roth. The world’s largest long-distance triathlon draws 3,500 individual athletes and an astonishing 260,000 spectators into a small Bavarian town every July. The famous Solarer Berg climb is lined wall-to-wall with cowbell-ringing fans — pure Tour de France energy. The course held the world’s best time for decades and remains one of the fastest iron-distance courses on earth. Entry sells out within 60 seconds of registration opening (typically the Monday after race day at 18:00 CET — set a calendar reminder now for 2027). Date: 5 July 2026.

Embrunman — Embrun, France (since 1984)

Running since the same year as Roth, Embrunman is everything Challenge Roth is not: brutal, lonely, and unapologetically French-Alpine. The bike course features 3,600 metres of climbing, including the fearsome Col de l’Izoard at 2,360 m. The race starts at 5:50 am in the dark. Heat waves and mountain snow have both featured on the same race day. Three-times winner Bella Bayliss calls it the toughest long-distance race she has done — harder than Hawaii, harder than Lanzarote. Date: 15 August 2026.

Challenge Almere-Amsterdam — Netherlands (since 1985)

Europe’s oldest long-distance triathlon and the world’s only iron-distance race held entirely below sea level. Almere has hosted 11 European Championships and two World Championships since 1985. The course is flat, sheltered, and fast — ideal for a personal best — with a spectacular run through the city centre. A genuine piece of triathlon heritage. Date: September 2026.

IRONMAN Lanzarote — Canary Islands, Spain (since 1992)

Thirty-four years and counting. Lanzarote is not a race for a fast time — it is a race for a story. Volcanic lava fields, 8,300 feet of climbing, and relentless Atlantic trade winds combine to make this one of the hardest branded IRONMAN events on earth. Most age-groupers spend over seven hours on the bike. Date: 23 May 2026.

The IRONMAN Europe Full Distance Calendar 2026

IRONMAN operates the largest branded long-course network in Europe. The 2026 season is one of the strongest in recent memory, with the European Championships split across Hamburg and Frankfurt, a returning Vichy full-distance, and several excellent destination races.

IRONMAN Hamburg European Championship — Germany (7 June 2026)

A city-centre full IRONMAN through one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. The course takes athletes through Hamburg’s iconic streets and waterways, with massive crowd support throughout. One of the fastest field runs on the European circuit.

Mainova IRONMAN European Championship Frankfurt — Germany (28 June 2026)

Frankfurt has hosted the European Championship since 2002 and consistently produces some of the fastest times in the sport. A flat, technical bike course and a flat run along the riverbanks make this a world-record candidate. Pro Series event with a significant professional field.

IRONMAN Nice — France (28 June 2026)

A Mediterranean sea swim, a brutal hilly bike into the Provençal hinterland, and a flat marathon along the Promenade des Anglais in front of 80,000 spectators. Nice is one of the most scenic and most iconic full IRONMAN venues in the world. In 2026 it also hosts the Women’s IRONMAN World Championship and the 70.3 World Championship in September.

IRONMAN Tours Métropole – Loire Valley — France (14 June 2026) ⚠️ Sold out

The inaugural full-distance IRONMAN in Tours is already sold out with 3,400 athletes registered. The river Loire swim and flat, château-lined bike course make it one of the fastest full-distance courses in France — a genuine sub-10-hour opportunity for strong age-groupers. Returns to 70.3 format from 2027, making the 2026 edition a one-time event.

IRONMAN Switzerland Thun — Switzerland (5 July 2026)

Alpine lake swim in Thun with stunning mountain backdrops, a rolling bike through Swiss countryside, and a flat run into the city. A long-running Swiss classic with consistently beautiful race-day conditions.

IRONMAN Vichy — France (23 August 2026)

The full distance returns to Vichy in 2026 after several years away. A river swim, rolling bike through central France, and an enthusiastic local crowd make this an accessible full IRONMAN for athletes stepping up from the 70.3 distance. Runs on the same weekend as 70.3 Vichy, creating a genuine triathlon festival.

IRONMAN Italy Emilia Romagna — Cervia, Italy (19 September 2026)

A flat, fast course on Italy’s Adriatic coast, beloved for its warm Italian crowd atmosphere and excellent late-summer conditions. Consistently one of the more accessible full IRONMAN courses in Europe for a personal best attempt.

IRONMAN Wales — Tenby, Wales (13 September 2026)

Tenby is known as “Iron Town” for a reason. The community atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else on the IRONMAN calendar — the whole town comes out. The course, however, is brutally hilly on both the bike and the run. Race it for the experience, not the finishing time.

IRONMAN Portugal – Cascais — Portugal (17 October 2026)

A bay swim at sunrise, a rolling bike course that includes a loop of the Formula 1 circuit, and a coastal run through the marina. Cascais is a beautiful late-season destination race with mild Atlantic conditions and a buzzing finish-line atmosphere.

IRONMAN Kalmar — Sweden (August 2026)

A coastal Swedish town with a big heart. Kalmar is famous for its community atmosphere — locals line every street of the run course. Flat ocean swim, fast coastal bike. Part of the Viking of the North challenge (combine with 70.3 Elsinore or Jönköping for a special medal).

IRONMAN Copenhagen — Denmark (16 August 2026)

A full IRONMAN through one of Europe’s most beautiful and liveable cities. Flat, fast, and incredibly well-organised. Viking of the North medal eligible when combined with a Nordic 70.3.

IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz — Basque Country, Spain (12 July 2026)

New for 2026, the full IRONMAN joins the existing 70.3 in Spain’s Basque cultural capital. A city with over a decade of triathlon heritage and famously passionate local support.

The Best IRONMAN 70.3 Races in Europe

The 70.3 distance is where European triathlon is growing fastest. In 2026, several new events sold out within days of opening, and the continent now offers a 70.3 for virtually every month of the racing season.

IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca — Spain (9 May 2026)

One of Europe’s most popular half-distance races, consistently in the top tier for atmosphere and course quality. A sea swim, fast roads through stunning Mallorcan landscape, and a flat run. Nearly 80% full within weeks of opening. Race it before it becomes impossible to enter.

IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-en-Provence — France (17 May 2026)

The French season opener in the warmth of Provence. A beautiful setting, reliably good weather, and a course that rewards well-rounded athletes. One of the most popular early-season races in France.

IRONMAN 70.3 Nice — France (28 June 2026)

Same Mediterranean magic as the full IRONMAN but at half the distance. Tougher than it looks on the bike with real climbing into the hills behind Nice. A Kona qualifying race and one of the most scenic 70.3 starts in the world.

IRONMAN 70.3 Versailles — France (12 July 2026) ⚠️ Sold out

Brand new in 2026 and already sold out. A swim in the Grand Canal of the Palace of Versailles, a bike through the Île-de-France countryside, and a run through the royal gardens. One of the most spectacular race venues ever conceived. Watch for 2027 registration.

IRONMAN 70.3 Les Sables d’Olonne — France (5 July 2026) ⚠️ Sold out

Widely considered the flattest and fastest 70.3 in France. A unique swim in the Vendée Globe sailing channel, a flat coastal bike, and a flat run. Sold out in six days — a record. Personal best conditions almost guaranteed.

IRONMAN 70.3 Valencia — Spain (19 April 2026)

The earliest major European 70.3 of the season. Flat Valencia streets, warm spring weather, and a fast field make this an excellent early-season race or season opener.

IRONMAN 70.3 Vitoria-Gasteiz — Spain (12 July 2026) ⚠️ Sold out

A brand-new addition to the Spanish calendar in 2026, already at capacity. The Basque Country delivers incredible crowd support and a varied course.

IRONMAN 70.3 Kraichgau — Germany (May 2026)

One of the most established 70.3 races in Europe, running since 2004. A reliable, well-organised event in Baden-Württemberg with a loyal athlete community built over two decades.

IRONMAN 70.3 Rapperswil-Jona — Switzerland (June 2026)

A stunning swim in Lake Zurich, a rolling bike through Swiss countryside, and a run through the medieval town. One of the most scenic 70.3 races in Europe and a Swiss institution since 2009.

IRONMAN 70.3 St. Pölten — Austria (31 May 2026)

Rated one of Europe’s most beautiful 70.3 courses, with a unique two-lake swim in UNESCO World Heritage-listed scenery. The Austrian Ironman classic.

IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire — UK (June 2026)

A hilly UK half-distance set near the Peak District. One of the most established British 70.3 races with a strong club triathlon community.

IRONMAN 70.3 Leeds — UK (June 2026)

Set in the UK’s triathlon heartland with a reservoir swim and urban city-centre atmosphere. Leeds has strong ties to elite endurance sport and a passionate local crowd.

IRONMAN 70.3 Gdynia — Poland (August 2026)

A Baltic Sea swim, fast coastal bike, and a growing Polish triathlon scene. Excellent value for money and a beautiful coastal city setting.

IRONMAN 70.3 Poznań — Poland (30 August 2026)

Flat, fast, and set in one of Poland’s most beautiful historic cities. The Polish triathlon scene is booming and Poznań is at its heart.

IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore — Denmark (June 2026)

A swim in the Øresund strait in sight of Hamlet’s castle, a scenic coastal course, and the starting point for the Viking of the North challenge. Pair it with IRONMAN Copenhagen or Kalmar for the special Viking medal.

IRONMAN 70.3 Jönköping — Sweden (June 2026)

Swedish lake and forest scenery at their finest. Viking of the North medal eligible. The Scandinavian 70.3 scene is growing fast and Jönköping is a standout.

IRONMAN 70.3 Vichy — France (23 August 2026)

Paired with the returning full IRONMAN Vichy for a true triathlon festival weekend. River swim, rolling countryside, enthusiastic crowds.

Challenge Family — The Athlete-First Alternative

Challenge Family races are widely regarded as having a warmer, more community-oriented atmosphere than the IRONMAN circuit. Entry fees are typically lower, courses are often in beautiful destination locations, and the racing culture feels closer to grassroots triathlon. Two full-distance events — Challenge Roth and Challenge Almere — anchor a calendar of excellent middle-distance races across the continent.

The Championship — Challenge Šamorín, Slovakia (May 2026)

Challenge Family’s flagship pro race, held at the x-bionic sphere in Šamorín with a €100,000 prize purse. A flat, fast middle-distance course with a world-class professional field. If you want to race alongside the sport’s elite athletes, this is the event.

Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee — Tyrol, Austria (27–28 June 2026)

The European season opener. Atlantic swim, hilly inland roads through volcanic Gran Canaria landscape. Warm weather guaranteed — ideal for kick-starting the race season.

A Baltic coastal city race set in one of Europe’s most beautiful historic old towns. Poland’s Challenge flagship event with a growing reputation.

Challenge Sanremo — Italy (April 2026)

The Ligurian Riviera season opener. A Mediterranean swim followed by the legendary cycling roads of Milan-Sanremo. One of the most atmospheric early-season races in Europe.

Challenge Forte Village — Sardinia, Italy (September 2026)

A luxury resort setting in southern Sardinia with a turquoise sea swim and warm late-summer conditions. Described as one of the most stress-free and enjoyable race experiences in Europe. The perfect way to end the season.

Challenge Barcelona — Spain (October 2026)

A warm-water beach swim at Mar Bella, a flat coastal bike, and a promenade run in one of Europe’s greatest cities. The ultimate late-season city break combined with a race. Added a middle-distance option in recent years alongside the full distance.

Independent Classics — Off the Beaten Path

Some of the best races in Europe carry no brand other than their own name. These independent events often have the deepest local roots, the most character, and the most passionate organisers.

Alpe d’Huez Triathlon — France (July 2026)

Not a race for the faint-hearted. A mountain reservoir swim at 700 m altitude (opened one day a year by EDF), a bike course through iconic Tour de France climbs including the Alpe du Grand Serre and Col de la Croix de Fer, and a run at 2,000 m above sea level. Raced since 2006 and already considered one of triathlon’s most iconic events, mentioned alongside Kona and Roth for sheer experience.

Mont Saint-Michel Triathlon — Normandy, France (June 2026)

A swim in the tidal dam opened just once a year, a panoramic bike through Normandy, and a marathon run that finishes with an ascent of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Mont Saint-Michel Abbey. One of the most unique and visually spectacular race experiences in Europe.

Elbaman — Island of Elba, Italy (September 2026)

A hidden gem. Set on the beautiful island of Elba off the Tuscan coast, this race has developed a devoted following since 2007 for its stunning scenery, challenging course, and incredible local community support. The road trip from the mainland is part of the experience.

iCAN Gandia — Valencia Coast, Spain (October 2026)

A fast, sunny late-season middle-distance race on Spain’s east coast. Ideal for athletes chasing a personal best or extending the race season into autumn in warm conditions.

The Extreme Circuit — If You Dare

The XTri and extreme triathlon circuits are effectively different sports. Entry is usually by ballot. A support crew is required at most events. Finishing times of 13–16 hours are normal. These races prioritise the journey over the result, and they attract athletes seeking what the mainstream circuit simply cannot offer.

Norseman Xtreme Triathlon — Eidfjord, Norway (August 2026)

250 slots. 6,300 applicants in 2025 from 96 countries. Athletes jump from the back of a ferry into the icy Hardangerfjord at dawn, tackle 10,000 feet of bike climbing through Norwegian mountain passes, then face the infamous Zombie Hill — a six-mile unrelenting climb — before summiting Gaustatoppen on foot. The median finishing time is over 15 hours. The king of extreme triathlon.

Swissman Xtreme Triathlon — Ascona to Grindelwald, Switzerland (20 June 2026)

Since 2013. A point-to-point adventure starting in the warmth of Ascona on Lake Maggiore and finishing under the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Three Alpine passes, cold lakes, steep climbs, and athletes from 40 nations. One of the world’s most spectacular triathlon courses.

Celtman Extreme Triathlon — Torridon, Scotland (June 2026)

The Scottish Norseman. A five-hour drive north of Glasgow into the most remote landscape in the British Isles. Sea loch swim, 202 km bike, and a run that finishes at the summit of Ben Eighe. Jellyfish in the swim, Atlantic headwinds on the bike, 950 m of ascent in the final kilometres of the run.

Alpsman Extreme Triathlon — Lake Annecy, France (July 2026)

Athletes take a boat to the start line in the middle of Lac d’Annecy. The full-distance course includes 4,000 m of Alpine climbing on the bike. There are two finish lines: a summit finish at Semnoz for athletes who make the cut-off, or additional lake loops for those who do not. Racing since 2016 and already a fixture on the extreme circuit.

Altriman — Annecy Region, France (July 2026)

One of the founding events of the XTri format, running since 2009. Set in the same stunning Alpine region as Alpsman, with mountain terrain, exposed conditions, and a summit run finish.
