Paris 2024: my predictions for who will medal in Triathlon
Women
1. Cassandre Beaugrand, FRA
2. Beth Potter, GBR
3. Emma Lombardi, FRA
This race will be brilliant with rising stars like Emma Lombardi, Jeanne Lehair, and Taylor Knibb. However, experienced athletes like Georgia Taylor-Brown and Flora Duffy should also be considered.
I could have easily chosen a handful of athletes for the medals, but ultimately, Cassandre will bring home the gold in front of her crowd.
Based on her performances over the past year and run prowess, reigning world champ Beth Potter will take second, and Emma Lombardi will take third.
Due to poor water quality, Beth Potter would be too strong and win if the Triathlon became a duathlon.
Men
1. Alex Yee, GBR
2. Hayden Wilde, NZL
3. Léo Bergere, FRA
The men’s race will be tight, especially if a pack forms on the bike. And despite being home Games for the solid French team, Bergere, Coninx, and Le Corre still need to gain the run speed to match Yee and Wilde over 10k.
Yee now has eight victories, but much more importantly, he believes he is the fastest short-course triathlete in the world.
Wilde is never far behind, but over this distance, he is behind just enough, and both men know that.
Unless Yee and Wilde have a shocking swim and miss the leading bike pack, they will win, with Yee dominating the Kiwi for the gold.
The French public would hope for a repeat of last year’s Grand Final in Pontevedra, Spain when three French finished on the podium, but I don’t see that happening.
Mixed team relay
1. France
2. Germany
3. Great Britain
The relay will include shocks, scares, and surprises, but I expect France to take the title by the time it’s over.
As they showed in winning the test event, the German team looks tailor-made for the super-sprint format but will come short of the gold, taking the silver ahead of Gret Britain.
Great Britain has talented athletes, but not selecting Johnny for the relay was a mistake. He has all the experience to lead the team and still has a decent pace on super short distances, as shown over and over in the Super League.
